The 3DS Emulator is one of the most satisfying projects to work on. I started on this project three years ago, and yet every day I find something new to make it better. The core team now has a total of six people working on this, with many more outside contributors helping out as well. In October 2016, we released version 1.1. 0, which was the first time that the emulator was capable of running games. Since then, we've added support for more ROMs, improved accuracy on some games, added the ability to save the state of a game for review or benchmarking, added controls that are always usable regardless of the game, and so much more. These tweaks have pushed our users experience with emulation forward by leaps and bounds. Nintendo has announced on their Japanese website that they are officially retiring the Nintendo 3DS this week. Nintendo had hoped to extend its life cycle beyond 2017 through regular software updates but announced in July 2017 that it would end production in March 2018 after selling almost 74 million consoles since its launch in 2011. In the article, Nintendo said it had no plans to sell the system past 2018, and that it would cease production of physical games for the handheld after April 21, 2018. The news proves an interesting circumstance for the 3DS emulator, a black market of sorts has developed of illegally obtained ROMs and games on the device. This emulator has been a key component in playing these illegally downloaded titles. In continuation with the Nintendo Switch's announced lifespan of 10 years, some have speculated that Nintendo will be phasing out its newer consoles after 5 years to direct focus on developing its older hardware. This would mean that the Switch may have a lifespan of about 5 years. A Nintendo spokesman said the company was aware of homebrew software being used in its 3DS console but did not comment on whether it would affect games now available for Nintendo's latest console, the Switch. The company said it takes "agreed legal steps" against makers of illegal software who try to "make unauthorized copies" for use with its consoles, including the 3DS.The announcement that Nintendo will be retiring their handheld has brought mixed feelings to not only fans but developers as well. With the 3DS being an almost identical system with the Switch, some developers see it as a threat or an opportunity. One developer has mentioned that Nintendo now has to focus on their new handheld, the Switch, instead of supporting their older handhelds. We will have to wait and see if any developers go against the company's mandate or move onto other consoles. With all of this said, Nintendo seems to be shaking things up with they way they are treating their fans. With 3DS being discontinued in March 2018 they have have kept quiet on any official details about the console but have offered developers some insight into what is planned for it moving forward. cfa1e77820
